Aquarium Fan

An aquarium fan is an essential piece of equipment for the aquarium if you're dealing with temperatures that are too high. Temperature plays an important role in the general health and well-being of your aquariums inhabitants. Our aim as a aquarium hobbyist is to give our livestock an environment that is stable. A tank that experiences wild temperature swings daily is bound to have some very stressed fish and corals. Its kind of hard to relate to as humans, or is it? Imagine walking into a 20C and 30C room back to back a few times day. I promise you at the end of the week you'd probably fall sick.

So whether you come from a tropical country or you're dealing with a hot summer, aquarium fans may be the solution for you. While they may not be as effective as aquarium chillers, they cost a fraction of the price and are an entirely viable method of aquarium temperature control.

Aquarium Fan

An aquarium fan works by blowing air across the water surface, thereby increasing evaporation and cooling the water. A common mistake that aquarium hobbyists make is to position the aquarium fan so that it blows down on top of the water surface. This is ineffective.

An aquarium cooling fan is no slouch, cooling of two to four degrees is entirely possible and it doesn't take an obscene amount of aquariums fans to achieve those results either.

There are many companies that sell aquarium cooling fans on the market. As such, they cater for aquariums of most sizes.

Its an add-on method of cooling. If your current aquarium fans aren't cooling the water down enough then just add more. At some point, you'll find the specific number of aquarium fans needed for the desired temperature.

Like aquarium chillers, aquarium fans do have their shortcomings.

Pros

  • Cheap. So much cheaper than an aquarium chiller
  • Runs on a small amount of electricity unlike aquarium chillers
  • Did i mention cheap?

Cons

  • Loud. There is some noise associated with most aquarium fans. This is usually not a problem with higher end aquarium fans.
  • Evaporation. The more you cool, the bigger the amount of water evaporation that takes place everyday. You'll be topping off your aquarium everyday if you use an aquarium fan.
