Aquarium Chiller and Temperature

Temperature is a very important factor when dealing with any type of aquarium. It must be within an acceptable range that depends on the needs of your aquariums inhabitants. Wide fluctuations in short periods of time can mean certain disaster. Fish, corals and invertebrates to not react well in those situations as it stresses them out severely.

Depending on the general climate of the area you live, you may either need an aquarium chiller or an aquarium heater. Since this hub is about aquarium chillers, i'll go ahead and assume you have a heat issue. There are many sources of heat we have to deal with. The number one source is undoubtedly the climate we live in. If you're from a country along the equator you probably have to deal with constant daily heat. Or you may have some killer summers year after year. Other sources include aquarium equipment such as lighting (Especially lighting) and pumps. An aquarium chiller is a reliable method on ensuring your livestock live in a temperature stable environment.

Aquarium Chiller

An aquarium chiller is essentially a refrigerator. Water flows into the chiller at a specific temperature and it leaves the aquarium chiller at a preset temperature.

There are many brands that cater to aquariums of all sizes and most of them do an excellent job maintaining stable temperature.

It is important you buy an aquarium chiller that is rated for your specific tank size (gallons). No point wasting money buying an underpowered aquarium chiller. It will take forever to bring temperatures down to the desired level with an undersized aquarium chiller.

  • Aquarium chillers are the most reliable way to control your aquariums temperature. Nothing else comes close. Just set it and forget it.
  • Reliability. Good quality aquarium chillers rarely fail. Poor quality aquarium chillers such as Resun (China) will fail at some point. Its not a question of if it will fail but when it will fail.
  • Flexibility. If i'm using an aquarium fan and i want to lower the temperature even more, i'd need more fans. With a chiller its a simple resetting of the desired temperature.
  • Aquarium chillers do not increase water evaporation unlike aquarium fans.
  • Peace of mind. If you get a reliable chiller for your tank size, you will never have to worry about anything except a power outage. Buy American or European. Chinese brands, while cheap, may fail you at some point.
