Starcraft 2

Starcraft 2 is the much eagerly awaited sequel the runaway hit real-time strategy game, Starcraft. This is the one game that causing the entire nation of South Korea to hold its breath. The original game has sold more than nine million copies to date, making it one of the all-time most successful RTS games for the PC.

As such, the build-up to the official release of Starcraft 2 has been unbearable for the hardcore fans worldwide. As is almost always the case when waiting for Blizzard to release a title, the wait is long, hard, but totally worth it.

Blizzard after all, produces some of the best games on the market today, as seen with their massive MMORPG hit, World of Warcraft. The quality of their titles cannot be understated. Any new games released by them tends to be a good seller as a result.

The game will be called, Starcraft 2 : Wing of Liberty and the entire game will revolve around the Terran race. Essentially, Blizzard has divided the story on the three races into three games, Wings Of Liberty (Terran), Heart of The Swarm (Zerg) and Legacy Of The Void (Protoss).

The other two titles will be released as expansion packs at a future date. This is certainly an interesting way to unfold the story and it does have some quarters displeased as it is seen by many as Blizzards attempt at milking the product to its fullest.

Protoss Race

Zerg Race

Terran Race

There will be no changes in the number of races offered this time around. Blizzard decided to stick to the original three for whatever reason. So it will be a three way battle among the Zerg, Terran and Protoss again.

The races will stay true to their inherent advantages and disadvantages as seen in the first Starcraft title. The protoss will be highly advanced but their units will be expensive. The Zerg emphasis on quick expansion and quick production of units to enable them to swarm over their enemies. Finally, the Terran are said to remain a tricky race with strong emphasis on defence, just like in the old game. It remains to be seen if the Terrans are also the hardest race to play in Starcraft 2.

Some units from the old game have been retained while others have disappeared completely. For the Protoss, their main foot soldiers, the Zealots, are present. But Dragoons are now replaced with similarly functioning units.

Terrans still have their Siege tanks and Marines along with other foot soldier varieties. The Zergs still have zerglings, mutalisks and hydras along with some other evolutionary morphs of creatures they have incorporated into the fold.

Starcraft 2 will only be released on the PC and Mac OSX thus far with no plans for a console port as of yet. Beta testing began sometime in the beginning of this year (February) and it is assumed that testing will continue for at least half a year. This should give them ample time to work out any bugs and imbalances in gameplay.

While they haven't exactly released a date, it is thought that Starcraft 2 has a very good chance of being released before the 4th quarter 2010. But if you know Blizzard, you'd know how unreliable their release dates are by now. All we can do now is wait. Head on over to www.starcraft2.com for further reading on the game.
