Aquarium Heater
63Aquarium heater
Aquarium hobbyists from colder climates routinely use an aquarium heater to raise their aquarium temperatures. Fish, invertebrates and corals that hail from tropical waters may suffer if temperatures drop below 70 degree Celsius. Stressed out fish generally have lowered immune systems and are very susceptible to disease and parasites. Finicky corals like some species of SPS will begin bleaching immediately if temperatures fluctuate to high or too low.
But on the other hand, if you're aiming for a cold water biotope filled with catalina gobies and garibaldi damselfish then you're lucky my friend. I have to chill my water to able to keep those beauties.
Aquarium Heater
Unfortunately, many aquarium heater brands out there leave a lot to be desired in terms of quality. It is after all a cheap product. But i always err on the side of caution when it comes to my livestock.
An Aquarium heater can fail in one of many ways. If can get stuck in the on position, where it will continue to heat the water endlessly until everything boils to death. Or it can get stuck in the off position, where the reverse happens, your livestock freezes to death. Or worse, the aquarium heater may shatter.
Also, cheaper heaters do not heat the water accurately. You could set the aquarium water heater for 28 degrees only to see your water temperature rise to 30 degrees.
It is for all the reasons above that i list mainly Ebo-Jager heaters. They are built by Eheim and if you've every been around the hobby for any length of time, you'd know Eheim builds quality stuff.
Built to last forever, just set the desired temperature and let it do its job. This is one area you really do not want to skimp on. Do it right the first time.
Placement of the heater unit is also important. It should never be in the main aquarium display. Put it in a sump or at least in an area where your fish cannot access. During heating the aquarium heater becomes incredibly hot and may harm any surrounding livestock.
